Pochettino Should Swap Sissoko With This Everton Star And Here’s Why
Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur are no longer in the title race but they have already qualified for the Champions League and the manager will now be responsible for improving the squad and making progress in all competitions next season. He has been looking at some stellar names recently and one name that is constantly doing the rounds is Everton’s Ross Barkley.
The English midfielder is yet to sign a new deal with the Merseyside outfit and is holding out on higher wages. Reports earlier in the season suggested that Pochettino and Ronald Koeman – the Everton boss, are ready to swap players in a shocking deal. It is reported that Everton are ready to let Barkley join Spurs and are happy to take Moussa Sissoko to the Goodison Park in the transfer window. Is this a beneficiary deal for the London club?
It will be hard to find a single Spurs fan who will want Pochettino to stick with Sissoko this summer. The French international moved to the Lane from a relegated Newcastle side last summer. However, he has failed to replicate his form in the Premier League from the previous season and has been nothing more than an extra number in the Spurs squad.
He has failed to find the back of the net in 32 appearances across all competitions this season and has just 4 assists to show for. Winger Son Heung-min has been regularly preferred over the Frenchman and it increasingly looks like he has little future at the club.
Letting him go will reduce the depth in the squad for Pochettino but he’d be replacing Sissoko with a top-class star. Everton’s Ross Barkley could yet prove to be a game changer.
Barkley has played 34 league games this season and has been a mainstay in the first team under Ronald Koeman. He has 4 goals and 9 assists to his name but has been criticised for the lack of consistency in crunch games. Capable of playing in any of the roles behind the striker, the 23-year old is a versatile youngster and fits the bill for Pochettino’s buying requirements.
He has lost a place in the English national team recently but a move to the White Hart Lane can see him reinvigorate his career, playing under one of the best man-managers in Europe. The likes of Dele Alli, Harry Kane, and Eric Dier are also going to help him settle into the club, making him a decent option.
Sissoko has no chance of playing regular football, even if he decides to stay in London. So it is better for Tottenham to send him to Merseyside, first to make a place in the squad and get rid of him, and secondly, to negotiate a deal for Barkley, who is also on the verge of an exit.
