Middlesbrough missed a host of chances to beat Wigan Athletic to spurn a chance to go level on points with fourth-placed West Brom, who lost to Leeds United on Friday.
The first of those misses came from Britt Assombalonga, who finished it from close-range in the ninth minute after Jonny Howson’s delivered a good ball in the box.
Before that, Ashley Fletcher had a shot which looked to be on target but his effort was superbly blocked by Chey Dunkley.
Wigan’s Sam Morsy forced Darren Randolph into a good save in the midway point of the first-half. However, Boro’s Fletcher missing two great chances early on in the second half summed up an average day in front of goal.
The second of those Fletcher chances arrived when Assombalonga fed him through and he went around the keeper, but, couldn’t locate the back of the net.
The draw leaves Wigan on 36 points, three away from safety with 12 games remaining for them. For Tony Pulis’ Middlesbrough, they remain fifth in the table, two points behind West Brom and nine behind the automatic promotion places.
It was a frustrating game for them where they created enough to win all three points, but it wasn’t to be.
