Norwich City opinion: Canaries linked with John Obi Mikel – Good move?

According to a report in Eastern Daily Press, newly promoted Norwich City are interested in signing Middlesbrough midfielder John Obi Mikel during the summer transfer window. Other promoted side Sheffield United are also in the race.

The 32-year-old’s contract at Teesside is about to end, however, he wants to stay in England and complete his education in football. The Nigerian star has been in this country for more than ten years (h/t Eastern Daily Press).

The midfielder wants to play Premier League football in the future (h/t Eastern Daily Press). It could be a part of the reason why he is not extending his stay at Boro.

Although both Norwich and United have quality players, who have taken them to the top-flight, it may make sense if they sign a player who has an abundance of experience of playing in that league.

Here’s why the Canaries should beat the Blades to the signature of the 32-year-old:

Norwich could benefit from the experience and quality of Mikel

Norwich City under Daniel Farke have been a team who feeds off high intensity in their game and play an attacking brand of football.

For that reason, despite conceding 57 goals in 46 league games, they managed to win the Championship. It was chiefly due to the fact that they scored the most numbers of goal in the division – 93.

But, going into the Premier League, the balancing act is a must, especially when it comes to the defensive line and midfield department. Scoring goals isn’t easy in the top-flight, hence, they’d need to be tighter at the back and the midfield should support them in that regards.

Therefore, signing someone of John Obi Mikel’s quality and experience would be sensible on their part. The Nigerian spent 11 years at Chelsea and was one of the top midfielders for them.

His knowledge of England’s top-flight football could help others in the squad to function in that direction.

Furthermore, Farke has never managed in the Premier League before, hence, he may not be too unhappy to have a player who can guide him about how things shape up in various situations.

Conclusion

Norwich City have been a success story in the past 12 months. Their football is attractive and deserves Premier League football. Having someone of Mikel’s know-how would help them in stabilising the defensive midfield position.
