Newcastle’s problems would be answered if they sign this 24-year-old Belgian speed demon soon

Why Newcastle signing Jordan Lukaku is the right move

According to a report in the Guardian, Premier League strugglers Newcastle United have agreed on a loan deal for Lazio left-back Jordan Lukaku. The 24-year-old, who is the brother of Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku, has joined the Magpies for the rest of this season.

As per the report, Newcastle will have an option to buy the player at the end of the season. However, it is not yet clear what the fee would be at this point in time.

The Belgian has been with Lazio since 2016, but was out of action at the start of this campaign due to a knee injury. Since then, he has mainly warmed the bench for Simone Inzaghi’s side, making just one start in the league.

Here’s why this is a fantastic move for Newcastle United:

Magpies have got a player for the vacant left-back slot

Newcastle have struggled in the Premier League this season, and it hasn’t come as a surprise after a lack of substantial investment in the summer. They have been a defensively solid team under Rafa Benitez, even though scoring at the other has been an issue.

The Magpies have been decent at the back this year as well, however, they are short on options to fill that left-back spot. Paul Dummett was a regular last season but with the Welshman not being available for games due to recurring hamstring problems, the manager has been forced to change his system and shoe-horn a player at left wing-back.

He switched to a back-three and deployed winger Matt Ritchie at left wing-back position. While this move has worked to a certain extent, it shouldn’t be considered as an option for the rest of this season. Dummett’s fitness cannot be trusted upon, partly because hamstring issues could recur multiple times.

Hence, signing a new left-back is a wonderful step taken by the club. Jordan Lukaku is a fantastic wide player, who is predominantly a left-back, but can also operate on the left wing. The Belgian possesses great pace to make runs up and down the pitch.

He is defensively strong and can dribble past defenders at the other end to deliver delicious crosses into the box. Salomon Rondon would be delighted to know that the 24-year-old has a great crossing accuracy.

All in all, Lukaku ticks all the boxes of Newcastle’s requirements. Expect him to do well for the Magpies.
