Newcastle United opinion: Should the Magpies sign Patrick Erras?

According to a report from German publication BILD, Newcastle United are preparing a move for Nuremberg’s 24-year-old midfielder, Patrick Erras, in the summer. Rafa Benitez is keen on strengthening his midfield, as the Magpies look forward to yet another season in the Premier League.

Newcastle have almost overcome the possibility of relegation this season. With 6 games left to play, anything barring an astronomical collapse will keep them in the Premier League. However, the club have a number of areas that they need to address before the start of next season.

Rafa Benitez’s contract with the club comes to an end in the summer and the Spaniard’s future is still unclear. Losing Benitez would be a massive blow for the Magpies, especially after how he has helped keep the club stable without sufficient help from the board.

Another massive area of concern for the Toon is the midfield. Newcastle could potentially start next season without Issac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame. Hayden and Shelvey have been linked with a move away from the club and Diame’s contract is set to expire in the summer.

Newcastle will need reinforcements in central midfield and Patrick Erras will be a fine addition. The German, despite not starting enough games, has been hugely impressive and his performances in recent games have made him a fan favourite.

Nuremberg look down and out in the Bundesliga as they sit 19th in the table after winning just one of their last five games. Relegation looks a serious possibility for the German outfit and Newcastle should sway Erras away from the club, with the temptation of top-flight football.

Standing at 6ft 5in, Erras is a dominator in the midfield who possesses immense strength to hold off his opponents. The German has a fantastic sense of positional awareness and is rarely ever caught out of possession.

Erras, thanks to his height, is a huge threat from set-pieces and is an absolute nightmare for defenders to deal with inside the box. The 24-year-old has a powerful right foot too and is capable of scoring comfortably from outside the box.

Conclusion

All in all, Patrick Erras has all the qualities in him to become a top midfielder in the coming years. His height, strength and positional awareness, combined with his able contribution in attack, makes him a complete midfielder and that will improve further in the Premier League.

Newcastle will have a real gem on their hands if they manage to sign Patrick Erras in the summer and with proper management, he could dominate their midfield for a long time.
