Newcastle’s gamble on this 25-year-old South American star would add a much-needed spark

Why Newcastle United must take a punt on Giorgian De Arrascaeta

Back in July 2018, Sun had claimed Newcastle United were monitoring playmaker Giorgian De Arrascaeta, who was a part of the Uruguay squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Giorgian De Arrascaeta, 25, left Cruzeiro after three years to join Flamengo in January 2019. He has enjoyed a fantastic debut season with Flamengo, having bagged 11 goals and as many assists in 20 Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A appearances. The Uruguay international’s contributions were vital in helping Flamengo win the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian league title.

With De Arrascaeta’s stock on the rise, Newcastle United must reignite their interest in the playmaker when the transfer window reopens.

Newcastle United’s attacking woes in the Premier League this season have been well-documented despite them forking out sizeable amounts of cash on Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin in the summer. They have managed just 13 goals in 14 games.

The lacklustre return of just 13 goals in 14 games clearly exemplifies the need to dip into the market for attacking reinforcements. While Saint-Maximin has shown flashes of his potential, Joelinton has only found the net once in 13 appearances and Miguel Almiron is yet to score since arriving at the club in January.

With that in mind, Bruce should prioritise signing an attacking player in the upcoming winter transfer window. Newcastle are in dire need of a creative spark in their team and Bruce must go for Giorgian De Arrascaeta.

More Newcastle United News:

De Arrascaeta, who can play as a winger, striker or as a number 10, has been a star performer in the Brazilian league for a number of years now.

The 25-year-old is an exciting talent with great technique, dribbling skills and eye for goal. In the video below, one could get a glimpse of the South American’s flair, link-up play and ability to produce moments of magic.

In 19 league appearances, he has averaged 2.1 shots per game, 2.5 key passes and 2.4 dribbles. [Courtesy: WhoScored.com] The Uruguay international’s versatility in the final third of the pitch is a big plus as it allows the manager more flexibility in the way he wants to play.

He has contributed significantly to Flamengo’s double-winning season and at the age of 25, De Arrascaeta now looks ready to test himself in Europe.

Verdict

The highly-competitive nature of the Premier League and the gruelling physicality makes the English top-flight an intimidating challenge for any player and De Arrascaeta, who has never plied his trade outside of South America, isn’t an exception.

Yet, Newcastle must take a punt on the playmaker and hope it pays off immediately.
