Newcastle would have been wise to sign this outstanding Man United talent – Bruce should have pushed for it

Newcastle United should’ve signed Axel Tuanzebe

Newcastle United haven’t had the best summer despite getting some new signings over the board in the summer. There have been protests against owner Mike Ashley and they’ll have to put that behind now that the new Premier League season has started.

Rafa Benitez has left the club and Steve Bruce has come in since, having the difficult job of satisfying the St.James’ Park faithful. The Magpies will be hoping that they can get some performances to get the crowd going again.

Their transfer activity wasn’t the most inspiring as they got Joelinton from Hoffenheim, who is a creative target-man, along with Allan Saint-Maximin, who is an excellent dribbler.

Neither of them is a great goalscorer and it’s something that Newcastle will struggle with all season and will have to depend on their defence to bail them out of games.

One defender who could’ve helped them out was United youngster Axel Tuanzebe, who was linked with a move to the Magpies in the summer. Tuanzebe was on loan at Aston Villa last season and was extremely impressive in his loan spell and even impressed in United’s pre-season tour.

United have far too many centre-backs at the club currently, with Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in the ranks. And it is surprising that they are still at the club despite years of mediocre performances. Tuanzebe will need game time and St. James’ Park is a fantastic place to play football in.

Newcastle did not make the best of starts to their season after losing 1-0 in their first game of the season against Arsenal and following that with a tepid performance against Norwich City away from home. They will need to use their home advantage if they are going to survive this season.

Steve Bruce

For the last couple of seasons under Rafa Benitez, they’ve finished in 10th place and 13th place, which would be seen as a fantastic achievement considering the lack of quality in the current squad.

Newcastle are still far better than some of the teams in the Premier League but it only takes a few losses on the trot to kill the confidence of the side.

Conclusion

If Newcastle are to stay up this season, that’ll be more than enough for Steve Bruce to be seen as a success. As mentioned above, they won’t be able to win too many games with their attack and it was important that they got more defensive recruitments. Rafa Benitez’s defensive system allowed them to survive in the previous seasons but it might not be enough this time around.
