Why Newcastle United did a good job by keeping hold of Isaac Hayden

Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden was one of the many reasons as to why the club survived the 2018/19 season, with Miguel Almiron, Ayoze Perez, Fabian Schar and Salomon Rondon also playing a huge part.

However, he was determined to leave Newcastle at the end of last season as he wanted to be nearer to his family down south.

In a surprise turnaround of events, the 24-year-old has opted to stay at St James Park, even after Rafael Benitez left the club to join Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang.

Now, Isaac Hayden is clearly in the right frame of mind, and after performing superbly in the second half of last season when injuries had sidelined a number of senior players, the midfielder has arguably been the Magpies’ best player so far this campaign.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Hayden admits that he’s prepared to sit down with the club, as well as new manager Steve Bruce, and talk about extending his stay on Tyneside.

Keeping Hayden on Tyneside was arguably one of the best bits of business of Newcastle’s summer, with the player.

Of course, the former England youth international has an empathy with Steve Bruce, having worked with him previously during a loan spell at Hull City, and he also admitted that his style of play suits him on a personal level too.

In the last 18 months, Hayden has grown as a player and proven he can hack it in the Premier League. He is a solid passer of the ball, tough tackler and an energetic presence in the middle of the park that helps keep his team tick over.

The ex-Arsenal man is by no means flashy but his industrious approach is invaluable for a team that tends to play direct football.

Not only the Englishman’s stay has been a good news for the fans, but also for young Sean Longstaff, who really seemed to relish operating beside him in the centre of the park during the second half of the previous campaign.

Hayden is turning out to be a leader on the pitch for the Magpies and that should be a good sight for the Geordies and Bruce.

Verdict

The 24-year-old central midfielder admitting his wish to sign a new contract will be music to all Newcastle fans. Hayden is one of the crucial members of this Magpies side and Bruce has done a great job by keeping hold of the combative midfielder, especially with Mohamed Diame leaving the club.
