Newcastle United have committed a grievous error by failing to land this shrewd 31-year-old attacker – Agreed?

Why Newcastle United should have signed Javier Hernandez

Back in April, a report from the Chronicle had claimed that Newcastle United were interested in signing then West Ham striker Javier Hernandez.

Javier Hernandez, 31, joined Sevilla on a three-year deal from West Ham earlier this month. His West Ham future had been uncertain following the arrival of club-record signing Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt in July.

A decent start to this season for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, along with the Mexican having less than a year remaining on his contract, convinced the Hammers to agree to the player’s request to leave.

As far as Newcastle are concerned, they invested heavily in the summer transfer window. Steve Bruce brought in the likes of Joelinton, Allan Saint-Maximin, Emil Krafth, Jetro Willems and Andy Carroll ahead of the new campaign.

Despite the Magpies focusing on reinforcing the attack, Bruce’s side still lack firepower up front. Joelinton broke his Newcastle duck in the 1-0 victory over Tottenham last month. The burly Brazilian has shown a lot of promise for his new club but he hasn’t been a prolific goalscorer in his career.

Carroll, meanwhile, rejoined his boyhood club from West Ham on a pay as you play deal over the summer. The 30-year-old has spent the majority of the last few seasons on the sidelines, so Bruce just cannot rely on the target-man to keep his fitness intact. And then there is Yoshinori Muto, who scored only once in 17 Premier League games last season.

That’s where Newcastle could have done well by signing Javier Hernandez. He is a typical box-to-box poacher and is a guaranteed goalscorer. While the Mexican has a lost a yard of pace or two, he can finish off the chances with regularity and link up play with others. He has loads of Premier League experience and would have brought with him abundance of quality.

At 31, Hernandez has plenty of football left in him and would have been a perfect fit for Newcastle. The ex-Manchester United star could have been their perfect back-up option for Joelinton.

Verdict

Newcastle have signed a couple of really good players to enhance the quality of their forward line but they could have added some much-needed depth by acquiring the services of Hernandez. His relatively low price-tag could have proven to be a bargain signing in the future.
