Back in January, a report from the Chronicle had claimed that Newcastle United were interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach star, Patrick Herrmann. However, a deal never materialised then.
A product of the Borussia Monchengladbach youth academy, Patrick Herrmann, 28, made his first-team debut back in 2009/10 season. Since then, he has been a regular fixture in Borussia Monchengladbach colours.
The two-cap German international had a decent 2018/19 campaign where he managed only three goals and two assists in 24 Bundesliga games. He has made no appearances so far this season and despite Herrmann having a contract at Borussia Park until 2022, Newcastle must test Monchengladbach’s resolve in January for the winger.
Newcastle splashed a lot of money on Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin in the summer transfer window. Their acquisitions have bolstered the Magpies’ attack, with Joelinton scoring the winner against Tottenham in north London last month.
However, they still lack offensive resources and with the likes of Ayoze Perez and Joselu leaving the club in the summer, Steve Bruce must bring in another attack in January.
Patrick Herrmann, in that regard, could boost Newcastle’s attacking credentials with his pace, flair and movements on the flanks. He is renowned for his electrifying pace, which the German often uses to stretch opposition defences.
The Uchtelfangen-born attacker’s pace allows him to provide ample threat on the counter-attack, which can be a useful weapon in the Premier League.
That is exactly what Newcastle have lacked for some time now. Even though Saint-Maximin has added that element to their attack, a player like Herrmann from the other side would make Steve Bruce’s side a potent threat on the counter.
Although the 28-year-old needs to sharpen his finishing and final balls, his composure could take Bruce’s side to the next level.
The German forward would be a perfect fit for Bruce’s brand of football at Tyneside as he is a player who loves to work hard and cause problems using his speed and agility when transitioning from defence to attack.
The acquisition of Herrmann would not only improve Bruce’s attacking options significantly at St. James’ Park but also added more competition for Christian Atsu, Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron for a starting berth in the Newcastle first-team.
