Newcastle United Blog: Should Benitez Keep This West Ham Linked Superstar At St James’ Park?

Back when Newcastle United experienced relegation to the Championship in the 2008-09 season, they were able to bounce back straight after just one season in the second division. They were able to do so largely because the club kept the best players at the club. Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan were all Premier League quality players who spent the season in the Championship in order to get the club back to the top division. Newcastle look like being unable to repeat the feat this season.

Daryl Janmaat is the latest player to enter into the headlines after he was left out of the latest matchday squad following rumours of interest from West Ham.

Sissoko is being linked with a move to Inter Milan and he is likely to fetch around £30 million for the north-east outfit. This is a substantial sum of money that can be reinvested across the pitch. Benitez seems to be of the opinion that an entire clear out of the squad is essential. After one of the worst campaigns in recent memory, Benitez has a right to feel that the current players do not seem to give their 100%.

Fans have been highly critical of the current ownership, which they criticise for being too focused on getting transfer income and making profits out of it. The sale of players like Sissoko is expected to increase the profits even more. Fans would like to see a significant chunk of this amount reinvested in the squad. The likes of Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gael have come to the club, but a proper replacement for Daryl Janmaat should also arrive if he leaves.

As a Dutch international, many expected Janmaat to be one of the first exits from St James’s Park as soon as relegation was confirmed. However, the full-back has so far remained committed to the cause. Newcastle, though, seem to be tempted by the offer on the table. Janmaat is one of the valuable members of the squad. After having made a poor start to the season, selling Janmaat may just be a way to get a significant transfer kitty.
