Newcastle signing this versatile 26-year-old star would solve their left wing problems once and for all

Newcastle United opinion: The Magpies should revive interest in Diego Laxalt

Newcastle United’s struggles has been widespread this season, but their biggest issue has been adding a proper and reliable star.

Miguel Almiron and Salomon Rondon have been the first ones to genuinely make an impact, with the likes of Christian Atsu, Matt Ritchie and even Jacob Murphy struggling to do as much.

Things need to change for the club and while that will happen with time, one thing they can do to speed up the process is by adding new players. But they have to be the right ones and doing that is easier said than done.

However, if there is one thing that is true, then the Magpies should have a rather healthy list of new additions to target.

One man who should be on that list is AC Milan star Diego Laxalt. The Magpies were linked with a move according to the Chronicle Live in April, but nothing has materialised so far.

Now with the summer window open, Newcastle should take advantage of that and try to at least get a bid in for the versatile star. A talented player, Laxalt needs regular game time to show what he can do and Newcastle United need a player who can reliably play for them.

The 26-year-old has always been a consistent mark for every club he’s ever played for, making a career total of just over 200 appearances. That kind of consistent and injury-free physical condition is just what the Magpies need next season.

Diego Laxalt’s versatility allows him to play anywhere on the left flank as a left-winger, left wing-back or a left-back. This means that no matter what formation Rafael Benitez uses, the 26-year-old will find a place for himself in the starting eleven.

His time at AC Milan hasn’t been the best, with him playing just 19% of the available minutes. It’s a rather meagre amount for a player as talented and versatile as Laxalt, which is why he needs to look at the possibility of a future away from San Siro.

Newcastle United, on the other hand, need a new left-back, especially with Benitez using Matt Ritchie as a makeshift option. The Scottish international is surprisingly sound defensively and has done well. However, at the same time, he cannot be a long-term solution.

That leaves Paul Dummett but he has struggled immensely with injuries and that puts the onus on a new addition.

Conclusion

Newcastle United need a left-back or even a left wing-back and it has to be a new addition this summer. They cannot make the same mistake they did last season and Diego Laxalt has the athleticism and the physicality to flourish in the Premier League.
