Newcastle signing this struggling Serie A star would be a clever move by Steve Bruce

Newcastle United opinion: Why the Magpies should go for Valon Berisha

According to a report from Football Italia, Valon Berisha could re-join Red Bull Salzburg after just one with Lazio.

Lazio signed Berisha from Red Bull Salzburg last summer but he endured an injury-hit debut campaign at the Italian capital, playing just 14 times. He could return back to Austria on a season-long loan and only needs approval from Lazio.

Back in March 2018, the Chronicle reported that Newcastle United were interested in signing Berisha from Salzburg.

A move didn’t materialise during the following summer transfer window and Lazio signed him. However, Newcastle must now reignite their interest in the midfielder and beat Salzburg to his signature.

Newcastle United have a new manager in Steve Bruce, who replaced Rafael Benitez earlier this month. The Magpies are yet to sign a player this summer but will have some money to spend following the sale of Ayoze Perez and Joselu.

They are currently in crisis and with just a couple of weeks left for the transfer window to slam shut, Bruce needs to quickly make some signings to improve his squad.

While signing a proven top-flight striker remains a priority, the newly-appointed Newcastle boss should also resolve the club’s problem no.10 position.

Ayoze Perez has left the club for Leicester City, leaving the Magpies with absolutely no creative No.10 who can unlock defences. That’s why signing Valon Berisha would make sense for the Toon Army ahead of the new campaign.

Berisha’s move to Lazio hasn’t worked as per the scripts and he’ll be keen to revitalise his career elsewhere. A switch to Newcastle could be ideal for him as he could finally solve the club’s No.10 problem. He is a talented dribbler, who also possesses an abundance of skill, which can keep defenders guessing.

The Kosovo international can play through the middle or on either of the flanks and would provide Bruce with further attacking intent in the final third.

The 26-year-old could be that creative link that brings fluidity to Newcastle’s play and helps them score goals consistently. All in all, Berisha would be suited to Bruce’s direct football with an emphasis on moving the ball quickly upfront.

Verdict

Bruce would need the financial backing to pull off a deal and if he manages to do so, it would be an ideal statement to kick-off Newcastle’s summer transfer business.
