Why Newcastle United should reignite their interest in Mady Camara

Back in May, a report from the Evening Standard had claimed that Newcastle were among a number of Premier League clubs interested in completing a move for Olympiacos midfielder Mady Camara.

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder, who was rated at £12million by the Greek giants back then, had been the subject of interest from Watford, as well as several clubs in Germany and Italy (h/t Evening Standard).

Despite widespread interest from several clubs across Europe, the Guinean international stayed put in Greece.

Born in Matam, Guinea, Mady Camara started his footballing education at AS Kaloum and Santoba FC in his homeland before earning a move to Europe with Ajaccio in the French second-tier in the summer of 2015.

Having impressed as a trialist at the club, Camara signed professional terms in the summer of 2016 and made 49 appearances for Ajaccio in all competitions over the course of two seasons. He was instrumental in putting the club on the brink of promotion to the Ligue 1.

The Guinean’s burgeoning reputation in France prompted Olympiacos to swoop for the midfielder in 2018 and Camara hasn’t looked back since then, establishing himself as a force to reckon with over the course of his one-and-a-half year stay with the Greek heavyweights.

The robust midfield enforcer impressed with 6 goals and 2 assists in 36 appearances for Olympiacos in his debut season and he has already clocked up 17 appearances in all competitions this term, making his presence felt in the club’s UEFA Champions League campaign.

Averaging 1.3 tackles, 3 dribbles and 2.7 long balls per game in the Champions League, as per whoscored, Mady Camara has certainly caught the eye as a central midfielder.

To put things into perspective, it would be wise for Newcastle United to reignite their interest in the Guinean enforcer when the transfer window reopens in January.

He is not the finished article just yet but he still has plenty of time on his side to adjust his game to suit the demands of playing in the highly-competitive atmosphere of the Premier League.

Verdict

With Mo Diame no longer in the frame and Ki Sung-yueng nearing the autumn of his career at the age of 30 – and Sean Longstaff attracting interest from Man United (h/t Sun) – Newcastle need to freshen up their central midfield cavalry. A potential deal for Camara could work wonders for the Magpies moving forward.

The emergence of Matty Longstaff continues to be a sight for sore eyes to savour. Despite that, however, bringing in Camara would help Newcastle add some much-needed stability and steel to their midfield.

All in all, Newcastle United going back in the market for Mady Camara could pay off handsomely.
