Newcastle United opinion: Magpies in for Jon McCracken – Good move?
The 19-year-old, who has been capped by the Scotland national team at the youth level, was with the Hamilton Accies before moving to Norwich back in 2016.
Now, with Newcastle interested and Blackburn also tracking the progress of the player (h/t Edinburgh News), we could see him moving elsewhere, partly due to the fact that the Canaries have Tim Krul and Michael McGovern fighting for the number one spot in the team.
The Magpies are currently in a situation where their manager has left the club, but here’s why making a move for McCracken would be good for the future:
McCracken could be a long-term number one
Jon McCracken is a quality young goalkeeper who possesses the abilities to become the number one for any top-flight club in England or Scotland.
In terms of his attributes, the 19-year-old is pretty decent in shot-stopping and being dominant in the air from crosses. His positioning and reflexes are very good most of the time, which makes him a favourite to stop close-range shots as well.
The Scot’s kicking may still have question marks, but that can be improved in due course of time. The best thing about him is that he is a very quick learner, so expecting him to enhance the quality of his kicking won’t be a surprise.
Thus, if Newcastle United are interested in signing him, then it won’t be a bad idea at all. The Magpies currently have Martin Dubravka as their first-choice keeper, with Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot as backups.
If they manage to bring McCracken into their squad, then he can be Dubravka’s direct rival for the number one spot.

All in all, we can conclude by saying that the Magpies are doing the right thing by having an interest in signing Jon McCracken.
