Newcastle United vs Burnley Report: Newcastle United Match Report

Newcastle ended Burnley’s unbeaten run after 2-0 win at St.James’ Park. Despite Burnley’s dominance in the league in recent weeks, it was the home side that started this game in the ascendancy. Newcastle saw much more of the ball than the Clarets and were able to move it around really well.

Ayoze Perez and Miguel Almiron were causing the Burnley defence a lot of trouble right from the off while the physical play of forward Salomon Rondon was shelling out its fair share of nuisance as well.

With a few minutes gone, it was obvious that Burnley were struggling to get into the game and they paid the price for this in the 24th minute when Newcastle worked the ball really well on the left side.

As Javi Manquillo saw no forward pass on, he pulled the ball back to the centre-half on his side – Fabian Schar. He wasn’t pressed by the Clarets players and was given time to line up an absolute rocket from more than 30 yards out that gave a diving Tom Heaton no chance whatsoever to make it 1-0.

Even after this, there was no real reaction from Burnley as they kept carelessly giving the ball away and once again, Newcastle took advantage of their sloppiness in the 38th minute.

The ball found new signing Miguel Almiron in the middle of the park who played a spectacular ball out to Matt Ritchie. His cross went over Rondón who had attracted all the defenders giving young Sean Longstaff enough time to take a touch and volley it home to make it 2-0 to the Magpies.

With Burnley’s unbeaten run at risk, Sean Dyche instructed the players to push forward and on the verge of half-time, James Tarkwoski had a golden chance from just a couple of yards out but the technique of his volley was all wrong and he blasted it over the bar to miss a sitter.

Sean Dyche responded by bringing on Robbie Brady in place of Dwight McNeil at the start of the second half, and a change of tactics too happened for the Clarets. But one again, Newcastle started the game on the front foot.

They were able to completely control the ball right from the start and midfielder Sean Longstaff was having an absolute ball in the middle of the park. He was excellent moving the ball forward and he helped out the defence as well by putting himself about.

Despite a late Burnley push and the introduction of super-sub Peter Crouch, the Clarets weren’t able to conjure up their magic against the Magpies at St.James’ Park and the game ended 2-0 in favour of Newcastle.

Here’s how some thrilled Newcastle United fans reacted to this emphatic victory:
