“Never play for Rangers again”, “Bye bye”: Some Rangers fans tear star man apart after 2-1 defeat vs Kilmarnock + Match report

Kilmarnock vs Rangers report: Rangers match report

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers suffered a late heartbreak as they were beaten 2-1 by Kilmarnock on Sunday. Alfredo Morelos’ second-half equaliser wasn’t enough to get the win.

The game got off to a cagey start, with both teams taking their time to get into the game. The Gers had two chances in quick succession as Morelos’ shot was saved before Daniel Candeias rattled the post.

However, the hosts almost immediately took the lead as Youssouf Mulumbu fed Chris Burke on the right side of the box, who finished it well. The goal was completely against the run of play.

Ryan Kent had an attempt on goal saved well by MacDonald. Morelos found some space on the left and tried an effort from a tight angle but missed the target.

Despite being a goal down, Gerrard’s men were dominating the game but had no luck in front of goal. Mulumbu tried his luck from distance but his shot was blocked well.

Jon Flanagan was the first player to go into the book after a poor challenge in the opposite half. The physical side of the game crept in as a number of needless fouls were conceded by both sides.

Ryan Kent found some space outside the box and tried to power one in but his shot was blocked brilliantly. Eamonn Brophy had a golden chance to extend the hosts’ lead but his shot from the right-hand side of the box was off target. The Gers went into the break a goal down.

Kilmarnock started off the second half well as Brophy had another chance to get a goal but his shot was saved comfortably by Foderingham.

The Gers continued to see a lot of the ball but failed to create any reasonable chance to go ahead. Alan Power wasted a brilliant shot to double the hosts’ lead but his shot from inside the box narrowly missed the target.

Steven Gerrard brought on Dapo Mebude in place of Daniel Candeias in the 64th minute. The substitution changed things around for the Gers as Morelos blasted home the equaliser a few minutes later.

The forward was given a yellow card for excessive celebration but he wouldn’t have cared one bit. The Killies suffered a huge blow as their goalkeeper hobbled off with an injury and he was replaced by Devlin Mackay for the final 20 minutes.

Greg Taylor tried his luck from the left side but his shot was easily saved by Foderingham. Kent had a go from a freekick but his shot was high and well wide of the goal.

Jermain Defoe was brought on in place of Andy Halliday for the final 10 minutes of the game but Gerrard should have made the change a lot earlier. A very rare sight in football occurred as goalkeepers of both teams were substituted. Andy Firth came on for Foderingham.

The Gers suffered a huge blow in the 88th minute as Borna Barisic committed a silly foul on Stephen O’Donnell inside the box, which gave the hosts a penalty. The Croatian went into the book for the foul.

Eamonn Brophy made no mistake from the spot to give his side a late lead and a valuable win. Rangers will be ruing their wasted chances but they end the season as runners up.
