According to a report from Calciomercato (The Berkshire Live), Leeds United are among a host of sides looking to sign Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez.
Nahitan Nandez, 23, joined Cagliari in the summer from Boca Juniors and has enjoyed a great time in his debut Serie A season so far. The Uruguay international is now considered to be a vital member of the Cagliari squad, having managed a goal and two assists in 13 Serie A appearances.
Leeds were linked with a transfer for Nandez before his move to the Serie A club, and with the versatile midfielder now impressing in Italy, they have shown an interest again. With that in mind, should the Whites go for the Uruguayan midfielder?
Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United are placed 2nd on the Championship table after Jack Harrison’s 87th-minute header secured a 1-0 win over Reading. A clash with Middlesbrough on Saturday is next up, but after wins at Luton Town and Reading to kick-start the run up to Christmas, there will be confidence oozing through the their squad.
However, Leeds don’t have the biggest squad, as it is Bielsa’s preference to work with smaller numbers but that must change. They need more depth in their squad if they are to win automatic promotion after narrowly missing out last time around.
As far as Nandez is concerned, he is now considered to be an irreplaceable aspect of Rolando Maran’s Cagliari side after demonstrating immense versatility and creativity from central midfield. He is a regular fixture in the Uruguay national team as well, showing he is a cut above the Championship level.
Nandez possesses the ability to elevate the Leeds’ midfield to a whole new level, and he would surely be a regular starter under Bielsa. However, the Whites already have strong options available to them in the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Adam Forshaw, Ezgjan Alioski, Jamie Shackleton and Mateusz Klich.
Hence, Leeds should aim to strengthen other areas of the pitch in January and avoid signing Nandez, as they look to win a long-awaited promotion back into the top-flight under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa.
