Thomas Lemar vs Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – A Statistical Comparison

Arsene Wenger is one of the busiest managers this trasnfer window as he is desperate to improve the quality in the first team next season. This has seen him get linked with some of the finest players in world football and one player they are confident of landing is AS Monaco star Thomas Lemar.

The versatile winger was in sensational form in France last season, picking up 14 goals and 17 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions for his side. The 21-year old could complete a £45m switch to the Emirates in the upcoming days and the player that he is expected to replace in the squad is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The versatile English midfielder is an option in the middle of the park but Wenger has decided that Lemar is the right man for his squad, now that the ‘Ox’ has decided to quit the club this summer. So how do Lemar’s stats compare with Chamberlain’s numbers in the Premier League?

Lemar played a whole 17 hours of football more than the English lad, scoring 9 goals and picking up 10 assists in the French league. The Arsenal man scored just 2 goals and 7 assists all season.

With a passing accuracy of 84%, Lemar created 2.41 chances per game, registering 2.07 key passes per game last season. The Ox, on the other hand, has a passing accuracy of 83%, but made just 1.37 key passes per game and created just 1.77 chances per game in England. This proves that Lemar was more effective in the final third but Oxlade Chamberlain was superb when it comes to the midfield duties.

With a successful take-on rate of 68.89%, Chamberlain won 34.88% of his aerial duels and 50.40% of his total duels last season. Lemar has a take-on success of 59.21%, but won just 30% of his aerial duels and 49.46% of his total duels last season.

Though the Frenchman had one interception per game and suffered 1.62 fouls per game compared to just the 0.57 interceptions and 0.97 fouls suffered by the Ox, Lemar is a more attack minded player. Though he may not be good enough to replace Alexis Sanchez at the club, he is just about a fine replacement for the Chilean.

The Ox is a unique player hard to find in the current transfer market. Arsene Wenger should rather look to keep hold of Oxlade-Chamberlain and also sign Thomas Lemar. That would mark an outstanding improvement in the quality of the squad. Imagine an attack comprising of Alexis Sanchez, Alexandre Lacazette, Mesut Ozil, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thomas Lemar! Now that’s what I’d call, ‘world-class’.
