Middlesbrough Opinion – Why Middlesbrough are right in re-igniting interest in Isaac Vassell

According to a report in Birmingham Mail, Middlesbrough would re-ignite their interest in signing Birmingham City striker Isaac Vassell in the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old was a target of the Riverside club in January, but the Blues were not prepared to sell any of their forward players, including Vassell. (h/t Birmingham Mail)

As per the report, Tony Pulis will return with an offer for the player once the transfer window reopens. He is willing to pay upto £2million to get the deal done.

Isaac Vassell

Vassell was a recipient of a long-term injury, which he suffered in October 2017. But he has made full recovery and is now back in the first-team action.

Here’s why Middlesbrough are right in re-igniting their interest in the striker:

Boro need quality up front

No doubt Middlesbrough are in the race to finish in the top-six, meaning they are pretty much on course to contest the play-offs at the end of this season.

However, their progress in this campaign has been mainly built on defence, while the attack has struggled to put teams away on a regular basis. Boro have scored only 40 goals in 36 league games this year.

Only six other clubs have scored the same or less amount of goals in the Championship this season, and they are all below 15th in the table.

The concession of only 28 goals is a positive, but, it is clear that Tony Pulis’ men need more quality and ruthlessness up front. Just for an instance, they have lost their previous two games, where the defence didn’t hold up and the attack couldn’t take the responsibility of bailing the team out of trouble.

That speaks volumes about the lack of attacking threat this team possesses. Hence, reigniting the interest in Isaac Vassell makes complete sense.

Even though the 25-year-old striker has missed large parts of football in the past 18 months, he still remains a player who possesses the attributes to be better than what Middlesbrough have at the moment.

The Birmingham man has pace, accurate shooting abilities and is good in the air to be a good aerial presence in the box. He has the physicality to hold the ball up and also not bad in dribbling past defenders.

Conclusion

All in all, Vassell could add an extra dimension to this Boro front-line. The 25-year-old’s career has stagnated at Birmingham, maybe a move towards the Riverside would help him as well.
