There is not a game that Barcelona play without Lionel Messi on the score sheet. The little magician is closing in on German Gerd Muller’s record each game and is now only one goal short of the legendary forward’s total tally of 85 goals for club and country in a calendar year, set in 1972.
Messi scored a brace again to help the Catalans win 5-1 against Atletico Bilbao, Barcelona are currently enjoying their best start in Spanish league history so far and extended their dominance over rivals Real Madrid.
Barcelona has 13 wins and a tie this season, surpassing Real Madrid’s start of 12 wins and 2 draws in 1991-92. This is Messi’s 11th two-goal game of the season.
Messi’s next chance at the mark is Wednesday in a Champions League game against Benfica.
