Match Report: Barcelona 3-1 Olympiacos
FC Barcelona won comfortably against Olympiacos with a 3-1 result. Lionel Messi taking his tally to 100 European goals with a sublime freekick and a Gerard Pique sending off were the highlights of the rainsoaked match.
Barcelona started dominating the match from the very outset and created a lot of chances with gorgeous passing and brilliant movements. Sergi Roberto and Deulofeu looked extremely sharp on the right wing, with the latter creating legitimate goalscoring opportunities. If it hadn’t been for their keeper Pronto, Barcelona would’ve bee out of sight early. Paulinho struck the cross bar with his header from an accurate Iniesta cross.
The first goal came for Barcelona, thanks to Deulofeu’s brilliance down the right flank and his cross was slotted home by debutant Nikolaou for an own goal. The only other talking point from the first half other than the own goal was the sending off of Gerard Pique. Pique earned his second yellow for attempting to score a goal while handling the ball albeit on second viewing, the decision seemed pretty harsh.
Second half continued in the same manner with Barcelona calmly holding on to the ball and maintaining possession. Barcelona looked comfortable despite their numerical disadvantage. At the 60th minute mark, Messi earned Barcelona a dangerous freekick extremely close to the goal. Leo swerved the freekick home and reached 100 European goals. He became the first person to do so after Cristiano Ronaldo and did it having played 38 fewer matches. He also became the first to reach 100 European goals with a single club. 2 minutes later, Messi was in the midst of the action again as he fooled an Olympiacos defender in the box and squared the ball.
Iniesta and Paulinho couldn’t get themselves to reach the ball but left back, Lucas Digne who was given his start after many weeks because of Alba’s injury was on hand to finish it off emphatically. Olympiacos seemed to have given up at this point and Barcelona continued their onslaught in terms of possession statistics. Olympiacos managed to get themselves a souvenir however, when Nikolaou managed to redeem himself with a set piece headed goal – the only smudge on an otherwise perfect night for the Catalans.
