“Mediocre match for Barcelona”- Twitter Reacts To Barcelona’s Sloppy Win vs Girona + Match Report

Match Report: Girona 0-3 Barcelona

Barcelona maintained their 100% start to their La liga campaign with a victory against newly promoted Catalan side, Girona, in a sloppy away match at the Estadi Montilivi. Valverde tried some tricks and experiments with his lineup by playing Vidal as RW and Paulinho ahead of Busquets with Rakitic playing the holding midfielder role. He also rested Gerard Pique for this match.

Girona, comprising a lot of young Manchester City players on loan, having been incorporated into the same ownership, provided some good competition to Barcelona in the opening minutes. Vidal made his way into the box and tested the former Athletic Bilbao keeper, Gorka Iraizoz. Marc Andre ter Stegen was at his supreme best when he denied Douglas Soares with a fine right handed save and also got back up to parry away the second attempt from Michael Olunga at the near post.

Barcelona’s first goal was from a brilliant set-piece routine and had a huge share of luck. Lionel Messi found Jordi Alba at the far edge of the box from a surprise corner kick routine and Alba greeted it with a volley home. The shot, albeit poorly struck, was directed home by a ricochet off Aday. Gorka Iraizoz made a spectacular save from a Messi freekick to keep his side stay alive in the game.

Barclona’s second goal was both beautiful and bizarre to watch. Aleix Vidal made his way into the box with a strong run and back-heeled the ball into Suarez’s path, who couldn’t get his touch on the ball. However, the ball went in after a deflection from Gorka Iraizoz’s outstretched thigh. In the latter stages, Barcelona dropped the heat and tried to play out an already sloppy match with the lead in the bag.

Girona played an excellent offside trap in the match and Luis Suarez was caught offside at least half a dozen times. However, he managed to escape the offside trap in the 69th minute, after Sergi Roberto found him with acres of space down the left flank. The Uruguayan gave Iraizoz the eyes and calmly slotted the ball home to extend his team’s lead to 3-0. This was his 87th goal for the club in 100 appearances in La Liga, a brilliant feat.
