Mascherano extends contract with Barcelona

 

Barcelona’s Argentina international Javier Mascherano has agreed to extend his contract with the La Liga team by two years to the end of June 2016.

He told Mundo Deportivo, “(The new deal) is on the right track and I hope it will be closed shortly. I am happy, I feel valued and I want to continue for many years. “Signing for Barca was the best decision of my life. I have won people’s confidence and now I want to maintain it.” 

The versatile Argentine midfielder, who has developed into a key player at the Catalan club since completing a €22 million transfer from Liverpool in 2010. The 28-year-old, whose former Barca coach Pep Guardiola converted into a highly effective centre-back from a holding midfielder during his time in Liverpool.

“Mascherano has become a key player for us,” team-mate Lionel told Barca’s website.

“Since Guardiola played him in central defence I don’t think he has had a bad game,” the World Player of the Year added.

Known in Spanish as “El Jefecito” (The Little Boss), Mascherano has played 97 matches for Barcelona, helping them win six trophies– the Champions League, La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish and European Super Cups and the Club World Cup.

The final paper work will be done within this week and the deal which also includes a buyout clause of 100 million euros, up from 90 million will be finalised soon after that said a report from the Catalan club.
