Marriott to lead the line – Strongest 4-3-3 Derby XI to face Oldham in the League Cup

Predicted Derby County line-up to face Oldham in the League Cup

After a 4-1 mauling at the hands of Leeds United at Pride Park last weekend, Frank Lampard’s Derby County switch their focus towards the League Cup where they face Oldham Athletic away from home on Tuesday.

The first-round tie against League Two opponents Oldham is at Boundary Park, where Lampard and co. will be desperate to bounce back from the humiliating defeat at home against Leeds.

Team News

Curtis Davies missed the game against Leeds and should be out for “probably two weeks at the most,” claimed Lampard. Also, the game at Oldham will be too soon for Tom Huddlestone.

Striker David Nugent looks set to miss the Oldham game after sitting out the Leeds defeat with a foot injury he suffered in the opening league game at Reading.

Meanwhile, Ikechi Anya is back to training after recovering from injury, while Marcus Olsson remains sidelined.

Probable Derby County XI

Formation: 4-3-3

Manager: Frank Lampard

Scott Carson (GK)

Carson has been fantastic since joining Derby and will start in goal on Tuesday.

Andre Wisdom (RB)

Wisdom needs to provide more stability in his position. He often gets caught out of position.

Richard Keogh (CB)

Keogh was awful in the 4-1 hammering at Leeds and must redeem himself at Oldham.

Fikayo Tomori (CB)

An injury to Curtis Davies saw Tomori step in and he was the only spark in the defeat at the hands of Leeds last weekend.

Scott Malone (LB)

Summer signing Scott Malone could make his debut. He is quick, industrious and an attacking full-back who loves to get into attacking positions all the time.

Craig Bryson (RCM)

Bryson works hard at both ends of the field and always looks to win the ball. He is also capable of contributing with goals.

Bradley Johnson

Bradley Johnson (CDM)

Starting at the base of the midfield could be Bradley Johnson. His presence can give security to the midfield and allow Bryson to move a bit forward.

Mason Mount (LCM)

Mount had a poor outing against Leeds and needs to come up with the goods at Oldham.

Florian Jozefzoon (RW)

Jozefzoon is a nippy winger who, with his pace and skill-set, can cause a lot of problems to the Oldham defenders.

Tom Lawrence

Tom Lawrence (LW)

Lawrence has had a very good start to the new season and needs to keep going. He could arguably be Derby’s main threat going forward.

Jack Marriott (ST)

Marriott could finally make his Derby bow in the League Cup first round on Tuesday. Enjoyed a fantastic season in League One last term and Lampard will hope the striker lives up to the expectations in the second-tier of English football.
