Mark Hughes to make 1 key change – Strongest 4-4-2 Southampton XI to face Liverpool

Predicted Southampton line-up to face Liverpool in the Premier League

Southampton are yet to hit full stride under Mark Hughes this season after picking up just 5 points from their opening 5 games of the season. The Saints were unable to pick up a win against Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend as the game ended 2-2 on the night.

The Saints return to face an unbeaten Liverpool side this weekend and it will definitely be a tough game for Mark Hughes’ side. The Reds are coming into the game on the back of an inspirational Champions League win against Paris Saint-Germain and will be in good form when Southampton visit Anfield.

Team News

Danny Ings is out for this game as he cannot face his parent club and Manolo Gabbiadini is a doubt for the game.

Probable Southampton XI

Manager: Mark Hughes

Formation: 4-4-2

Alex McCarthy (GK)

The goalkeeper has been absolutely fantastic since taking up the reins from Fraser Forster. He will continue in goal against the Reds.

Cedric Soares

Cedric Soares (RB)

Soares has flourished in Mark Hughes’ system and has been one of the standout performers for them so far.

Jannik Vestergaard (CB)

The Saints new signing has looked great at the back so far. They seemed to look shaky at the back without him in the line-up.

Wesley Hoedt (CB)

Hoedt has been impressive after being partnered alongside Vestergaard. The same partnership could be fielded against the Reds.

Ryan Bertrand (LB)

Bertrand is a very potent force going forward for the Saints. His daunting runs down the flank will pose all sorts of problems for Liverpool.

Ryan Bertrand

Mohamed Elyounoussi (RM)

Elyounoussi looked impressive in the last game and possesses the quality to trouble Liverpool’s full-backs.

Mario Lemina (RCM)

Lemina’s set-piece prowess and defensive contribution have been massive for Southampton so far. Should start this game.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (LCM)

Hojbjerg has found good form in front of goal, scoring in the last two games. His crisp passing will be essential for Southampton going forward.

Nathan Redmond (LM)

Redmond is yet to fulfil his potential but is capable of threatening down the left flank.

Shane Long (ST)

Long should start in place of Danny Ings who is ineligible to face parent club Liverpool.
