Manchester United vs Newcastle United: Player Ratings for the Red Devils as this English Youngster Shines

The season continues to be a struggle for Manchester United’s attack as they were held to a stalemate by Newcastle at home. United did start the stronger of the two teams and even had the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was cancelled out for offside, replays suggested that the decision was a marginal one. Newcastle came alive in the second half of the first 45 and had a great chance when new signing Mitrovic headed against the crossbar with Romero beaten.

Both teams played some good end-to-end football but to no avail as they left the Theatre of Dreams with a point each. Wayne Rooney didn’t really have a great evening for the Red Devils and we rate the performance of the Manchester United players from the game.

Sergio Romero: 6/10

The only time Romero was in any peril was with regard to Mitrovic’s header which he could never get close to, else he had a quiet game and didn’t have to do much.

Matteo Darmian: 7/10

The Italian was solid in his defensive duties yet again, but he wasn’t the best when it came to the attacking aspects of the game.

Chris Smalling: 7/10

A good display by the English centre-back, he did have a tough time dealing with the movement and physicality of Mitrovic but did his best to handle the Newcastle attacker pretty well.

Daley Blind: 7/10

Everyone knows that Blind isn’t a central defender but Louis van Gaal trusts him enough to deploy him in the role and he had a decent enough game.

Luke Shaw: 8/10

The Manchester United left-back is finally showing what he really is made off, he was rarely troubled all game long and seems set to keep the left-back slot all for himself.

Bastian Schweinsteiger: 6/10

The German started the game for United, but he seems a little out of touch and unfit, he was replaced at the hour mark by Carrick but he needs to do more to keep a place in the starting XI.

Morgan Schneiderlin: 7/10

Nothing too special by the Frenchman, he didn’t set the field on fire but didn’t make any big mistakes either.

Juan Mata: 7/10

The most creative player out on the field for Manchester United, but Newcastle took care of the Spanish attacker well and stifled him.

Adnan Januzaj: 7/10

Another impressive display by the youngster, if he keeps putting in shifts like he did today, he still has a future at the club.

Memphis Depay: 6/10

Depay was a little disappointing in the game. He stole the show against Brugge in midweek but seemed off his game against Newcastle.

Wayne Rooney: 5/10

Had the ball in the back of the net but was correctly ruled out but Rooney couldn’t do much during the game and he does need a striker to play alongside him.

Substitutes:

Michael Carrick: 6/10

Brought on at the hour mark for Bastian and did well enough in the limited time he had.

Javier Hernandez: 6/10

He had one decent chance but couldn’t do much about it.

Antonio Valencia: 6/10

He came on to replace Darmian but couldn’t really do much to stamp his authority in the game.
