Manchester United vs Chelsea report: Manchester United match report
Manchester United began their Premier League campaign in style by beating Chelsea 4-0 at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Daniel James were the scorers as the Red Devils got the better of Lampard’s men.
Chelsea started the match brightly with overloads in the midfield, and United struggled to keep hold of the ball. Chelsea were coming into this on the back of a promising season under Maurizio Sarri and it looked like they’d retained some of the tactics and the style the followed under him.
The Chelsea players were constantly moving the ball around and won it back in dangerous positions, with Andreas Pereira often being targeted in turnovers. United were often forced to play the ball long to help their build-up as Chelsea constantly bypassed their press.
However, in the 18th minute, Marcus Rashford won a penalty as Kurt Zouma clumsily fouled him in the box. The Englishman converted it with calm and composure.
However, Chelsea should have been leading the game after hitting the post twice via Tammy Abraham and Emerson. Manchester United’s midfield was non-existent and they were lucky to be leading the game at half-time.
The second half played out similarly, with United trying to hit Chelsea in transition. However, despite their best efforts, Chelsea couldn’t find the equaliser and Manchester United punished them as they hit two goals in quick succession.
Marcus Rashford was instrumental in the second goal as he carried the ball and set it up for Jesse Lingard, who laid it to Pereira. He played a fantastic low cross from the right for Anthony Martial to score a tap in.
