Manchester United simply cannot afford to miss out on swapping this lacklustre 25-year-old for this £90m goal machine

Manchester United Opinion: Why Man United should swap Lukaku for Icardi

According to a report from the Express, Manchester United are willing to let Romelu Lukaku leave in order to bring in a new striker in the summer. The Devils are eyeing a move for either Juventus forward Paulo Dybala or Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi, the report adds.

Juventus would do everything possible to keep Paulo Dybala—one of their prized assets—at the club, even though the 25-year-old hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons in Serie A. But the same cannot be said of Inter Milan’s desire to keep hold of Mauro Icardi, who has fallen out with manager Luciano Spalletti and missed the Italian club’s Europa League clash with Rapid Vienna earlier this week.

The report further claims that Icardi has a £90m release clause in his contract which will be active for just two weeks in the summer. Manchester United are one of the richest clubs in the world and so coughing up £90m on a player wouldn’t be a problem. However, persuading Lukaku to join Inter Milan certainly would be but the club should do everything possible to get this deal done.

Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has replaced Jose Mourinho at the helm of United, Lukaku has become a bit-part player. Lukaku has found game time hard to come by under Solskjaer, with the Norwegian manager preferring Marcus Rashford up front.

In just a couple of months’ time, Solskjaer has lifted the mood of the supporters and has completely changed the style of United’s play. It’s crystal clear he prefers the pace, energy and liveliness of Rashford through the middle instead of a target-man in the mould of Lukaku.

Lukaku is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the Premier League, with the big Belgian already hitting over 100 league goals from spells with West Brom and Everton, as well as United. However, he just doesn’t fit the style of play Solskjaer wants at United and at 25, he certainly could do better by leaving Old Trafford for pastures new in summer.

Mauro Icardi

Solskjaer, who is likely to be appointed United’s permanent manager at the end of the season, should definitely try swapping Lukaku for Icardi. Icardi is considered as one of the deadliest strikers in Europe and he has been in fine form this season, scoring nine goals in 20 Serie A appearances.

The Argentine is technically-gifted, possesses different qualities to Lukaku and would be a superb addition for United.

Solskjaer has overseen a remarkable upturn in form at Old Trafford, going 11 games unbeaten at the start of his reign before finally tasting defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

The fans have been impressed with the attractive football Solskjaer has got the side playing and come summer, he’ll need solid backing in the transfer market if the Reds are to challenge the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool next season.

As far as Lukaku is concerned, United would do a good job by swapping him with Icardi. Icardi will suit Solskjaer’s style of football and could help take United back to the top.
