Manchester United opinion: Should the Red Devils go for Ruben Dias?
If there is one thing that new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to do to his Manchester United squad, it’s to freshen things up. The team needs a complete overhaul with more than a few players sold and they need to change their core.
The likes of Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian can no longer by options. For a club like Manchester United, having players that old, who simply cannot live up to the Premier League anymore makes no sense.
Instead, they need to look towards the future and snatch up a few young and talented superstars. Not only that, they need to stop adding players beyond the age of 28 and 29, with Alexis Sanchez’s current struggles.
Former manager Jose Mourinho preferred older players with a lot more experience but that needs to change under Solskjaer.
Having experienced players is not wrong but they need to find the right balance. At the moment that isn’t there with a large portion of their squad either 30 and above or itching towards that mark. That needs to change and one area that really needs new additions is their back-line.
The fact that Manchester United conceded a record number of goals in their history this season is a massive problem. It’s a problem for any side in the world but for a team that’s trying to chase after the Premier League title, it’s something that cannot happen.
Liverpool and Manchester City had an incredible battle this season but both sides conceded less than 24 goals. In fact, their combined total was 45 goals, which is lower than what the Red Devils had on their own.
This is something that cannot happen ever again and it’s also why a move for Ruben Dias makes a lot of sense. English news outlet, the Metro, has reported that the Red Devils are keen on a move for the young Benfica starlet.
Koulibaly is their top target but it looks like their bid has been rejected by Napoli. However, while that is a big blow, Dias is a brilliant second choice. A modern defender, the 22-year-old has done very well for Benfica.
Alongside Joao Felix, he’s amongst the club’s hottest prospects entering into the summer window. A centre-back by trade, the Portuguese starlet is one for the future. Tall, fast and a rather incredible athlete, Dias combines everything into one great package.
But it’s his defensive acumen that Manchester United need, with the 22-year-old a formidable presence at the back. His talent and technical skills are so good that Dias plays like a centre-back in his prime, which makes him better than most.
