2008 Champions League Final will always be remembered for that John Terry slip, with rain thundering down, the former England international just missed the decisive penalty and handed a crucial advantage to Manchester United. Ronaldo had opened the scoring for the Red Devils before Frank Lampard equalised at the end of first half. The remaining match went without any reportable incident until Drogba was sent off for slapping Nemanja Vidić four minutes from the end. In the penalty shoot Ronaldo missed the third kick, giving Terry the chance to win it for the Blues, however, his miss proved to be costly as Edwin van der Sar then saved Nicolas Anelka’s effort from Chelsea’s seventh kick to give Manchester United their third European Cup title. Edwin Van Der Sar

Regarded as the best goalkeeper to have played for the club since Peter Schmeichel by Sir Alex Ferguson, Van Der Sar spent some very fruitful years at United. His contribution was crucial was United’s success. On May 28th, 2011, he retired from active football.

A Manchester United academy product, he spent 15 longs years at the club, winning numerous titles. He was allowed to leave for Sunderland in 2011.

Rio Ferdinand

A transfer fee record breaker, Ferdinand is one of the most decorated English players of all time. He trophy-laden career at United end in 2014 when his contract expired, he went on to join Queens Park Rangers. However, after a disastrous first season with them, he announced his retirement from professional football and is currently a football pundit.

Nemanja Vidic

Vidic and Ferdinand were by the far the best centre back pairing in Europe at that time. After signing for United in 2006, Vidic went on to become one of the best centre-back the league has seen. In 2014, he left United to Inter Milan. After two mediocre seasons in Italy, Vidic announced his retirement from professional football.

Patrice Evra

Another solid defender, Evra captained both United and the French national team in his career. He currently plays for Juventus, where he has been fairly successful following his move in 2014.

Owen Hargreaves

Hargreaves was an important player in that central midfield, however, his career to a downturn as soon as injuries got to him. After struggling with injuries for a long time, he was released in 2011. He later joined Manchester City, which also did not turn out good.

Paul Scholes

A football expert currently, Scholes spent his entire football career at Manchester United. He retired from football in 2013. Certainly, one of the best midfielders to have graced the pitch at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick

Over the past few years, Carrick has seen his speed dip significantly but he still has a lot of experience and solidity to offer at United. Even in post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, he has been one of the consistent players.
