Manchester United need not regret this forgotten 22-year-old star’s departure on loan and here is why

Man United have no reason to regret the departure of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

According to The Sun, Man United youngster, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, has completed a transfer to League One outfit Tranmere Rovers on a season-long loan deal.

The 22-year-old, who made 14 first-team appearances for the Red Devils back in the 2015-16 season under Louis van Gaal, failed to impress Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier in the summer and he was apparently not in the Norwegian’s plans moving forward.

The Manchester-born academy graduate joined United’s academy as a kid way back in 2003 before his rapid rise through the youth ranks earned him his debut for the club’s reserve side in 2013 as a 16-year-old.

Borthwick-Jackson featured regularly for United’s U-17 and U-18 sides in 2013 and 2014 before eventually making his breakthrough in the senior team back in the 2015-16 season due to an injury crisis at the back.

The talented left-back earned rave reviews for his promising performances under van Gaal but he had gone completely missing from the first-team fold for more than three years, with unproductive loan spells at Wolves and Leeds United in the Championship not doing a world of good to his development.

The 22-year-old spent the entirety of the previous campaign on loan at Scunthorpe United in the third-tier, scoring twice in 33 appearances and a loan move to Tranmere this term means that he will once again be competing at the same level.

To put things into perspective, Man United have probably done the right thing by loaning him out to Tranmere Rovers, given that Borthwick-Jackson impressed at Scunthorpe last season.

Despite having enjoyed a breakthrough four seasons ago, the left-back didn’t seem to have a future at Old Trafford and staying on at the club wouldn’t have done him and his chances of resurrecting his career any good.

To that end, United’s stance on the youngster certainly makes perfect sense and, with the left-back’s contract at Old Trafford set to expire next summer, it is unlikely that they would offer him an extension, given his failure to capitalise on a bright start to his career.

Borthwick-Jackson is already 22 and approaching a stage in his career where he needs to settle down somewhere permanently and start playing regularly if he is really serious about making a name for himself in English football.

He is probably going to leave on a free transfer after his loan spell expires next summer, so there isn’t a realistic chance of him donning the club’s jersey again.

With that in mind, Man United should have absolutely no regrets over shipping the left-back out on loan and this does, indeed, look like a fair settlement for all parties involved.
