Should Manchester United Go All Out To Sign £70,000-a-week Tottenham Midfielder?

English giants Manchester United are planning a sensational swoop for rivals Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier. The 23-year old has become a key figure at White Hart Lane over the last year, and United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly a huge fan of his abilities and is looking to land him at Old Trafford with an offer of €35 million in the summer.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino sees the versatile midfielder as a prominent part of his side and is reluctant to let him go at any cost. But, with the huge transfer chest that will be available for Mourinho in the summer, we could expect him to go all out for the Englishman in the upcoming transfer window. But should the Red Devils make a move for Dier? If they do, where will he fit in? We take a look.

Manchester United have been one of the most improved teams in the Premier League this season. Contrary to what their current position in the league might indicate, Manchester United are developing under Jose Mourinho, into a solid outfit led by the talismanic Zlatan Ibrahimović.

Having already gotten their hands on two trophies this season with the FA Community Shield and the EFL Cup, the Red Devils still stand a chance to win more silverware as they continue strongly in their FA Cup and Europa League campaigns. The Champions League spots in the league are also well within their reach. United currently sit in the sixth place in the standings, two points behind the fourth-placed Arsenal.

Eric Dier would be a perfect fit for Manchester United.

However, for them to develop into a team that will challenge for the Premier League honours year in year out, more investments in the transfer market are of prime importance over the summer.

And one area where they would like to add more strength is their midfield. The trio of veteran Michael Carrick, the underrated Ander Herrera and the most expensive player in the world Paul Pogba, have been performing admirably well this season. Backup midfielder Marouane Fellaini, contrary to the general opinion, has been doing decently as well.

But the fact that United sold midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin to Everton in the January window and the minimal usage of Bastian Schweinsteiger has left them a little thin in the department. Add to that, the impending contract expiry of Carrick at the end of the season, they could very well be left with just three first-team midfielders in the summer, making an addition in the middle of the park of paramount importance.

Dier fits the bill perfectly for the 20-time English champions. A versatile customer, who was primarily signed as a central defender, the 23-year old has emerged as one of the most promising midfielders in the country over the last year and has made the role of the midfield enforcer his own for both club and country.

An astute tackler and a good reader of the game, Dier will be the perfect man to act as a shield for the United backline. He also has the pace and the stamina to cover the ground quickly throughout the length of the game. A solid operator, Dier possesses a decent range of passing as well, to get his team on the front-foot from the deeper areas.

The Englishman could prove to be the ideal foil for the midfield duo of Herrera and Pogba to prosper, considering the fact that he is a player who protects the defence, they could be given more freedom to attack the opponents’ box. This could prove particularly instrumental in getting the best out of Pogba, who hasn’t found his top form post his return to United.

Carrick’s future at the Old Trafford is uncertain and Dier could be the ideal long-term successor for the former Tottenham man. If there is a window of opportunity to sign him, United should definitely go for it.
