Manchester United: Is Louis van Gaal Doing The Right Thing By Ending Long-term Target’s Interest?

Toni Kroos has been heavily linked with Man Utd, as Louis van Gaal attempts to build a new look Manchester United squad for the next season. With the German not particularly happy with Bayern Munich, he will be a hot property in the market and United are looking favourites to nab him. Will he solve the central midfield crisis for the Red Devils? The answer is YES!

After the departure of Paul Scholes from the squad, Man Utd have lacked a natural play-maker who could dictate the tempo of the game. Michael Carrick is not that type of player as he is a defensive midfielder, and does the passing for the sake of holding on to possession. With the acquisition of Toni Kroos in the central midfield, the Reds will be bolstered by one of the best technicians in the world of his age. Kroos is similar to Scholes and on paper, he immediately improves the team. Probably Man Utd will need to spend more money and buy some extra players to become title contenders once again, but Toni Kroos rumours seem to indicate that the Man United hierarchy is thinking in the right direction.

When Toni Kroos will be played in a 4-4-2 formation, the system will automatically change into a 4-4-2 diamond with Kroos the main playmaker for two strikers and the attacking dimensions will be given by players like Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. With the acquisition of a top winger and a few good defenders, Toni Kroos will easily run the Man Utd team.

The German has had a good season with Bayern but has been reduced to a pass machine. With his ability to score goals from distance, whip in crosses and also contribute defensively, he can be termed as a complete midfielder. Bayern haven’t utilised him fully. His 2 goals and 4 assists in the league are decent stats for a passer, but his ability beckons more direct attacking play where he can dictate the pace of the game in the Premier League where different teams have different styles. With his ability he can make Man United have control over the game, which Fellaini and Carrick have failed to do while Cleverley has been a massive failure.

And one major factor to admire about Kroos is that, unlike the current crop of United midfielders, Kroos has the ability of shooting from range much like Paul Scholes. His thunderbolt drives against Arsenal and Schalke during the second half of the season, is a testament to his long range shooting as well as his temperament to stand up for big games and perform.

Kroos’ adaptability to play anywhere in the midfield was on full display over the past two seasons at Bayern Munich. From a typical attacking minded player under Jupp Heynckes, he has been retained to a pass master under Pep Guardiola and should he be played alongside a proper defensive midfielder at Old Trafford, there is none better than him to deliver the goods for the Red Devils

However, latest rumours suggests that Man United have all but ended their pursuit of Toni Kroos as new manager Van Gaal doesn’t want his former player. Although the exact reasons are unknown, it seems to be a drastic decision from Van Gaal. A player who has been the club’s target for well over a year, has been left out of the plans and it comes as a shock especially with the situation of other targets like Cesc Fabregas.
