Manchester United are undoubtedly one of the most ambitious clubs in the Premier League as manager Jose Mourinho is planning to make some big money moves in the summer, even before his side have qualified for the Champions League next season. The brand that Manchester United are, allows Mourinho to sign star players without the extra pull and this has seen him get linked with some of the biggest names in Europe. Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann is on top of the wish list for the Portuguese manager but with Atletico adamant not to sell their star turn, Mourinho has reportedly turned his attention towards another player from Spain.
The Red Devils have been looking to improve their midfield and Mourinho wants Real Madrid’s German star Toni Kroos at Old Trafford next season, if he misses out on top target Antoine Griezmann. The 27-year old World Cup winning midfielder is among the best in his position in Europe and Mourinho has decided that he will be the star signing for his side if they miss out on Griezmann.
So, is Kroos the marquee player that Manchester United need?
The midfielder, who is currently a first choice under manager Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu, has been influential in their run this season and the manager will surely be adamant to not let him go. Known for his immaculate passing and exemplary vision, Kroos has played a major role in a star-studded lineup in Spain and Mourinho might believe that he can lift Manchester United to their previous best.
Currently at Old Trafford, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are 4 players who are taking up the responsibilities of scoring goals. Griezmann, if he moves to Manchester United, would only be a luxury buy as there is no shortage of goals from Mou’s side.
However, the Manchester United midfield isn’t one of the best in the Premier League. Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera have been decent this season while Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick, two players used extensively by the manager, are not looking good enough for a title challenging side. Carrick is probably past his best and can only help the side in cup competitions and so Jose needs a midfielder to partner Pogba and Herrera and Kroos would be a world-class addition to their midfield next season.
The German midfielder loves to sit back and nick the ball off his opponents to set up his teammates for the attack. His passing accuracy makes him a dangerous player in the middle of the field. He is capable of picking his man from long distances and is a player who can split the opposition defences from a deep-lying role. The United boss will find it hard to stumble into another midfielder who can do the same and is best advised to do what it takes to land the German in the summer.
The Verdict
Kroos, with all his experience at the international level, will walk into the first team at the club and if he can start performing straight away, he would easily be a more effective signing than Antoine Griezmann.
