Man City signing this gifted Argentine star would prepare them for the post-David Silva era – opinion

Manchester City opinion: Should Guardiola go for Giovani Lo Celso?

According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, Premier League champions Manchester City are interested in Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.

Lo Celso, 23, enjoyed an impressive 2018/19 season at Betis on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, having made 46 appearances, scoring 16 goals and providing six assists in all competitions for the La Liga club.

His dazzling displays have seen Betis turn the loan deal permanent, which will be official from July 1. As a result, there are a number of European heavyweights eyeing up a move for the talented Argentine.

Manchester City are one of the clubs, with Pep Guardiola looking to assess the 23-year-old’s performances for Argentina at this Copa America, the report adds.

As far as the Copa America is concerned, Lo Celso has helped Argentina qualify for the quarter-finals, where they’ll face Venezuela on Saturday. Until the player returns to Betis, negotiations are unlikely to take place.

Nonetheless, Manchester City must not hesitate to splash the cash to sign Lo Celso from Betis this summer.

City star David Silva has confirmed that the next season will be his last at the Etihad stadium. The Spaniard, who has a year remaining on his contract, has completed 10 illustrious years in which he has won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups.

Nicknamed ‘El Mago’, Silva is regarded as one of the most gifted players to ever grace the Premier League and his potential departure in 2020 will leave a huge void at City.

It’ll certainly be difficult to replace the 33-year-old, considering how utterly consistent he has been in a decade-long stay at the Etihad.

Giovani Lo Celso has the qualities to be a long-term replacement for Silva, whilst adding more strength to the City midfield. A quick and skilful player, the 23-year-old is good with the ball at his feet, with great close control and dribbling skills, as well as has the ability to recycle possession.

He can drive his team forward and carry the ball into the final third, capable of carving open defences with quick one-twos with his teammates.

The Argentina international is a goalscoring midfielder, with the ability to shoot from distance and score screamers. All in all, Lo Celso is a dynamic and versatile playmaker, who can be an important asset for Pep Guardiola’s team in the present and future.

Verdict

Hence, City should not think twice in spending big for Lo Celso, who is open to a move to the Premier League in his pursuit for Champions League football.
