Man City completing £200k-a-week deal for their £43.6m star is an absolute no-brainer and Guardiola must do it

Manchester City Opinion: New contract Bernardo Silva – good move?

According to a report in Sky Sports, Premier League champions Manchester City are set to reward Bernardo Silva with a new six-year contract. The Portuguese international has been in terrific form this season, securing a regular place in the team under Pep Guardiola.

The former Monaco star arrived at the Etihad stadium in the summer of 2017 for a fee of around £43.6m, but wasn’t a starter in most games. He began playing on a regular basis since the turn of 2018, and has never looked back since.

As per the report, the new deal negotiations are close to being agreed and a £200,000-a-week deal is on the cards, which is destined to keep the 24-year-old until the end of the 2024-25 season. This contract extension would double his wages, when compared to the current one. (Sky Sports)

Here’s why the Cityzens offering Silva a new deal is a no-brainer:

Bernardo Silva is a nailed on starter in this team

In the early stages of this season, when Kevin de Bruyne – arguably City’s best player last season, was injured and set to face a spell out, not many predicted what Pep Guardiola would do in the Belgian’s absence.

The former Barcelona manager deployed Bernardo Silva in the central midfield role on the right-hand side, exactly where de Bruyne used to operate.

Truth be told, the Portuguese international has exceeded all expectations while playing in that position.

The ball-playing qualities comes to him as a natural trait, but the way he nurtured his game to be involved without possession and work hard for the team to press and win the ball back is something exceptional.

The 24-year-old is one of the reasons why Manchester City did not feel the absence of their best player, which is simply fantastic, to say the least.

When De Bruyne came back into the team, Bernardo Silva went back to playing on the right wing and has been impacting on the same level there. All in all, not many players can have a higher level of impact playing in two different positions.

Hence, the former Monaco man has become a nailed on starter in this City side, and is one of the contenders to win the player of the year award.

Conclusion

It is easy to see why handing a new contract to Bernardo Silva is a no-brainer decision by Manchester City. He has grown leaps and bounds under Guardiola, and has become a vital part of this City team.

It would be difficult to find a replacement for a player of Silva’s quality and the best option would be to hold onto him.
