Manchester City Could Complete A Smart Business If They Manage To Sign This £25m Defender

Jonny Evans

Back In Manchester, Jonny? – Why Evans Would Be A Good Addition To The Manchester City Squad

Manchester City made a decent start to their Premier League campaign, having made some excellent additions to the squad from the previous season. Manager Pep Guardiola went trophyless last season and it now looks like he wants to make sure that there is not even a remote chance of that repeating this season.

The manager has spent heavily on his backline this summer but is still not done with his transfer business as he is looking to add another defender to his squad. But what is surprising is the fact that he is now looking at a former Manchester United star in Jonny Evans.

The current West Bromwich Albion skipper Evans is a product of the academy at Old Trafford where he broke into the first team back in 2006. He spent nine seasons in Manchester, making 103 Premier League appearances before he was allowed to join the Baggies in 2015.

Since then, the 29-year old established himself as the first choice under Tony Pulis and is currently the captain of the side. Known for his ability with the ball at his feet, Evans is a smart player with a great understanding of the game. With 61 appearances for the Northern Ireland national side, Evans is an established star, but what will he add to the squad at the Etihad?

Strong in the air and with hold up play, Evans is a perfect centre-back for the English style of play. He can also play as a left-back and is comfortable taking on his man even in dangerous areas. But he is more than happy to sit back and soak up the pressure, to try and unsettle the opponents.

The Baggies have already rejected a £18m bid for his services but reports from the Daily Star claim that Manchester City are now ready to pay £25m for his services and that they are close to landing him this summer.

At that price, Evans is an absolute steal. He now has 207 PL appearances and 27 Champions League appearances and is one of the most experienced defenders in the league at the moment. His ability in possession of the ball and previous experience in the league is what will attract Pep Guardiola.

Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi are expected to be the first choice this season for the club while John Stones and Eliaquim Mangala are the backup options. If Pep decides to go with a 3-4-3 system, he has little backup and Evans could be the perfect man.
