Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils should sign David Neres?

According to a report from the Express, Manchester United are interested in signing Ajax winger David Neres.

The Brazilian international, 22, was one of the stars of an Ajax side that won the league and the KNVB Beker last term, as well as reaching the Champions League semi-finals. He earned a call-up to the Brazil squad after eight goals and eight assists in the Eredivisie last term.

The 22-year-old, who won the Copa America with Brazil on Sunday, has been linked with Manchester United and Everton but is under contract until 2022. With that in mind, Manchester United should try their best to beat Everton to the signature of David Neres.

After finishing sixth in the Premier League last season, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is slowly building a squad full of young players with potential to represent the club for years to come. However, the lack of signings to immediately make an impact is noticeable.

For a club of massive stature and history, the fans could be forgiven for expecting the Red Devils to challenge for the Premier League title every year.

Considering the lack of investment in the transfer market and Solskjaer rebuilding the squad after a poor 2018/19 campaign, most would claim that getting back into the top four next season is the top priority for the Norwegian and his side.

United need major improvement to catch the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool and while Solskjaer’s priority should be bolstering the central defensive options following the additions of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, a right-winger must also arrive at Old Trafford this summer.

The Reds lacked balance in the attack last campaign, with majority of the attacks coming down the left flank. That made them predictable, with the likes of Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford all naturally right-footed.

Juan Mata is left-footed but he lacks the pace and agility to play out wide, while Romelu Lukaku is expected to depart the club amidst interest from Inter Milan. That’s when the signing of David Neres would make sense for Solskjaer’s club.

Neres is predominantly a right-winger but he is also effective on the left and can play through the middle as well. He is speedy and is also a top dribbler with the ball as he has a knack of finding space out of tight areas.

The 22-year-old has good spatial awareness and uses his pace to chase down long balls played from the midfield.

Most importantly, the Brazilian international puts a shift off the ball and possesses a fantastic engine which he uses to press the opposition’s backline.

All in all, Neres could potentially form a thrilling attack with the likes of Martial, Rashford and James at Old Trafford.

Verdict

Neres is still only 22, which surely makes him an enticing prospect for Solskjaer, who has targeted young, talented and hungrier players to rebuild his United squad this summer.

The Brazil winger has the qualities to thrive in the Premier League and could turn out to be an inspired addition for the Reds.
