Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer couldn’t have asked for a better start to the new campaign, with his team picking up four points from the opening two games against Chelsea and Wolves.
The 4-0 battering of Chelsea at Old Trafford was a flattering scoreline for the Red Devils but it was just the start Solskjaer wanted.
After decimating Frank Lampard’s side at Old Trafford, Manchester United travelled to the Molineux to face Wolves on Monday. And they were better against Wolves than they were last season.
Solskjaer’s red army performed well at the Molineux. They were a good value for the draw, which happened after Ruben Neves’ fabulous strike cancelled out Anthony Martial’s early goal. Had Paul Pogba been able to convert his penalty then they would be sitting happily with six points from six. Nevertheless, four points out of a possible six is a good return.
The 1-1 draw with Wolves showed why Solskjaer must definitely take a dip in the January transfer window to solve a problematic position in his starting XI. The Norwegian wants his team to play with pace, fluidity and quick movement in the final third and so far United have done exactly that.
Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have impressed up top, with the duo interchanging positions as per the situation of the game. Jesse Lingard has done well with his tireless pressing and intelligent movement, but he’s not good enough at no.10 to help United win the Premier League title.
Back in 2016, the Manchester Evening News had claimed that United were interested in signing Mario Gotze, who was then playing for Bayern Munich. However, a deal didn’t materialise and the German World Cup winner returned to Borussia Dortmund the same year.
Mario Gotze, 27, has entered into the final year of his contract at Dortmund. After re-signing with BVB, the German had to battle with injuries and a metabolic disease which caused fatigue and weight gain. Now entering into the prime years of his career, United should rekindle their interest in Gotze and eye a cut-price deal in January.
Technically-gifted and tactically versatile, Gotze can play in various positions across the front-line. He has a good turn of pace and is capable of creating chances in the final third.
He can thread through balls in behind the defence as well as provide useful crosses from out wide. The German playmaker can deceive any defender with his quick feet and dribbling skills, while he is also excellent in linking up with his teammates.

The ex-Bayern star has a knack for scoring goals as well – making him a well-rounded attacker. There is no denying that Gotze has the qualities to thrive in the Premier League, whilst being a massive upgrade on Lingard in the no.10 role at United.
With just one year left on his contract, Gotze’s value on the transfer market would be on the lower end. That would make him an appealing target for United, who are aiming to bring Champions League football back at Old Trafford next term.
