Man Utd Opinion: Why should Man United revive interest in Thiago Alcantara?
Manchester United’s midfield is in jeopardy due to the departure of Ander Herrera to PSG and the most worrying part is the exit links of marquee man Paul Pogba. Juventus and Real Madrid are the potential suitors so far for the French World Cup winner. (h/t The Guardian)
Though there are the likes of Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira in the squad, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should have an experienced player to lead the midfield.
Given that, United should resume their interest in Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara, who was their target last summer (h/t Mirror). However, the transfer couldn’t see the light of the day under then-manager Jose Mourinho.
How would Thiago help Man Utd solve their midfield crisis?
The Spaniard has been at the heart of Bayern’s midfield over the course, making around 200 appearances.
Having graduated from La Masia, Thiago spent around two seasons with Barcelona before he made his switch to Germany.
Since then, the 28-year-old went on to etch his name among the best in his position, besides being an integral part of the Bavarians’ and the Spanish national team.
A central midfielder by trade, the ex- Barca ace has embraced the roles of being a defensive pivot as well as an attacking midfielder.
In the 2018/19 campaign, Alcantara was able to garner 3 goals and 6 assists, despite switching his positions often between central midfield and the pivot role.
Thiago holds the typical archetype of a Spaniard, who is adept at passing and dribbling while keeping his defensive capabilities unhinged.
He secured a pass success percentage of 92 with an average of 1.9 dribbles and 1.3 key passes per game. Defensively, he averaged 2.9 tackles and 1.5 interceptions.
The above numbers certainly fall into the category of the highest order, and United can reap rewards should they manage to bring Thiago to Old Trafford.
His inclusion could also enhance the competition level for Nemanja Matic, who has already entered his 30s.

Thiago’s versatility would allow him to fit in several positions in the midfield, however, he should take over the mantle of his compatriot, Herrera.
Central midfield is the position where the Norwegian manager should deploy him at Old Trafford.
Having already made their attack a sturdy one, the Red Devils should turn their focus to the midfield unit. Thiago holds the key to their midfield crisis and would also help United restore their good old days.
