Man Utd reviving interest in this 27-year-old midfield destroy would usher in a new age of glory days at Old Trafford

Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils should sign Danilo Pereira?

Back in February 2018, The Sun claimed Manchester United were interested in signing FC Porto’s midfield destroyer, Danilo Pereira.

Pereira, 27, joined FC Porto from Maritimo in July 2015 and has since become a key part of the first team at the Estadio do Dragao. However, he has managed just 45 league appearances for the Portuguese club in the last two seasons due to injury problems.

But the 27-year-old is now fully fit and helped Portugal win the Nations League last month. That being said, Manchester United must revive their interest in Danilo and attempt to sign him ahead of the new campaign.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to sign a new central midfielder following the arrivals of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini’s departures have amplified the necessity to strengthen the core of midfield and with Paul Pogba’s future up in the air, it makes proper sense to add another central midfielder to the mix.

Scott McTominay has already demonstrated that he has the ability to make a real difference in the starting line-up, but questions still remain over whether or not he can truly cement a first-team place at Old Trafford following the summer exit of Herrera.

Fred displayed flashes of his talent and will need another season to fully adapt to the Premier League, but Solskjaer’s main concern will be to replace Nemanja Matic.

Matic is clearly on the decline and struggled with fitness and form last season. The Serbian isn’t the most quickest of midfielders and his lack of pace and agility in the holding role make him a misfit in Solskjaer’s high-pressing system.

A more mobile, agile and athletic presence in the deeper midfield role is required and Danilo would be a straight upgrade over the ageing Matic.

Danilo is undeniably a very accomplished defensive midfielder, boasting excellent strength, technical ability and defensive acumen, while he has the knack of driving forward with the ball.

The 6ft 2in powerhouse is a fantastic tackler and has the ability to win every aerial duel. He is a good passer of the ball and is known for starting quick counter-attacks by winning back possession from the opposition.

The Portuguese international would fit perfectly in Solskjaer’s midfield alongside McTominay and Fred or Pogba if he stays. Danilo has the required qualities to thrive in the Premier League and he could be a fine addition to Solskjaer’s squad.

Verdict

Signing Danilo would be a step in the right direction for the Red Devils as the Portuguese midfielder’s impact could truly revamp United’s performances in the midfield next season.
