Man Utd reviving interest in signing this fiery 15-goal hitman would catapult them to being title contenders again

Manchester United opinion: Manchester United should revive their interest in Steven Bergwijn

Manchester United haven’t been title contenders since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club six years ago. They’re heading into another season without looking likely to challenge for the title but the expectations have finally tempered a little and a real rebuilding job seems to be taking place.

In recent years, the club have targeted big-money signings from other big clubs. A lot of players who are not of the standard and quality appear to be playing for Manchester United on long-term contracts – something which they did not earn based on their performances on the field.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment has seen a bit of a change in approach, as he’s evidently targeted younger players with very high potential. Signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and Daniel James from Swansea is a clear testament to that.

Other areas that need some improvement are the centre-back, midfield and right-wing area. The right-wing has been ignored for a couple of seasons now since Nani departed.

Steven Bergwijn of PSV Eindhoven was reported as a target in the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports.

Bergwijn enjoyed a fine season in the Eredivisie the last time. He also earned a call-up to his national side and was a starter in their run to the Nations League finals.

He scored 15 goals and registered 13 assists in all competitions last season, which was a fantastic return but it was overshadowed by his teammate Hirving Lozano, which is why Bergwijn went under the radar a little.

Bergwijn can play in many attacking positions in central and wide positions and his versatility will make him a fantastic player in the squad. He has amazing speed and frightening acceleration and strength.

He’s still only 21 and has a lot of room for improvement. He would definitely fit in with the narrative that is currently taking place at Manchester United – which is buying players who are young and hungry to develop into top players.

Bergwijn is also a very willing runner and will put the first. In many ways, his playing style is very reminiscent of former United player and academy graduate, Danny Welbeck.

Thus, Bergwijn would be a fantastic addition for many years.
