Manchester United Opinion: Why Man United should avoid signing Bakayoko

According to RMC Sport, Manchester United have contacted Chelsea over a possible move to sign midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko. (h/t The Daily Mirror)

The one-cap French international, 24, flopped at Chelsea after moving to Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £40 million back in 2017 from AS Monaco. He struggled to make an impression under then manager Antonio Conte and was sent out on loan to AC Milan by his successor Maurizio Sarri last summer.

Tiemoue Bakayoko endured a mixed time at AC Milan and has returned back to Chelsea, although he is not believed to be part of new manager Frank Lampard’s long-term plans.

Manchester United aren’t the only club keen on signing the 24-year-old. He has also attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain. However, the report claims that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eyeing Bakayoko to bolster his midfield options in case Paul Pogba leaves Old Trafford this summer.

Solskjaer’s midfield options have already weakened following the release of Ander Herrera, while Marouane Fellaini was sold to a Chinese club during the winter transfer window.

He is on the lookout for midfield reinforcements ahead of the new campaign, with doubts continuing to surround the future of midfield ace Paul Pogba, whose agent Mino Raiola confirmed at the weekend that the Frenchman wants to leave the club amid interest from Real Madrid and Juventus.

Pogba was United’s top goalscorer last season and his departure would leave a huge hold in Solskjaer’s squad.

Thus, that makes it very important for the Norwegian tactician to add at least a couple of midfielders this summer, regardless of what happens with Pogba. But the Red Devils must stay away from signing Bakayoko.

After a disastrous debut season with Chelsea in the Premier League, the loan move to AC Milan has worked wonders for Bakayoko. The number of clubs interested in signing him after the spell at San Siro documents how successfully he has managed to bring his career back on track.

Truly, the Frenchman was one of the best tacklers and ball-winners in the second half of the 2018/19 Serie A campaign, making him almost indispensable to Gennaro Gattuso.

Nevertheless, Bakayoko isn’t the player United require at the moment. A deep-lying playmaker and a creative no.10 have to be on Solskjaer’s agenda.

After the struggles of Nemanja Matic in the holding role this past season, Solskjaer needs a more technically astute figure in that position and Bakayoko doesn’t fit the bill at Old Trafford.

Verdict

Hence, United must stop pursuing a move for Bakayoko and shift their focus towards other targets.
