Man Utd going all out to sign this 10-goal Serie A ace would add the missing x-factor to their attack

Why Manchester United should go all out for Mario Mandzukic in January

According to a report from the Sun, Manchester United were in talks with Juventus over transfer for Mario Mandzukic on the summer transfer deadline day. In the end, however, Manchester United failed to bring in a replacement for Romelu Lukaku.

Mario Mandzukic, 33, scored 10 goals in 33 appearances for Juventus last season. But he has fallen down the pecking order under new boss Maurizio Sarri, who prefers Gonzalo Higuain as his first choice striking option, as evidenced by the Argentine starting in their Serie A opener against Parma.

It looks the Croatian centre-forward will stay put at Juventus, perhaps until the January transfer window. If that’s the case, Manchester United must reignite their interest in Mario Mandzukic and attempt to sign him in January.

The Red Devils sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan in the summer transfer window before recently allowing Alexis Sanchez to follow the Belgian’s footsteps, but on a season-long loan. That has clearly decimated United’s squad, leaving Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and teenager Mason Greenwood as only strike options to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer’s first and foremost priority will be to get United back to the Champions League. The Red Devils are miles behind the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City and aren’t expected to challenge for the Premier League title this time around as well.

The United boss knows the fact very well and has taken the job of rebuilding the squad. He managed only three signings in the summer but if United are to make it to the top four as well as compete for trophies this season, he’ll need to at least add a couple of quality players in January.

A central midfielder has to be the topmost priority, given the lack of options in the engine room.

Also, the Norwegian tactician should bring in sufficient cover in the forward department and Mandzukic would fit the bill perfectly.

An aggressive, technically-gifted traditional number nine, Mandzukic is a prolific goalscorer who is a massive threat in the box. Very strong in the air, the Croatian international comes out on top almost in every aerial duel.

He is well-versed in holding up the ball with his back to goal, and bringing others into play. The veteran striker is not also a goalscorer but also helps his team defensively when required.

The 33-year-old is vastly experienced having turned out for some top clubs like Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Juventus.

He is a World Cup finalist with Croatia, and that kind of know-how and winning mentality would surely be a major asset for Solskjaer’s young squad. Furthermore, Mandzukic will offer a different threat up top than that of Martial, Rashford or Greenwood.

Verdict

Mandzukic is in the final stages of his career and won’t cost much for United. That being said, Solskjaer must do everything to his powers to bring in the experienced Croatian to Old Trafford in the New Year.
