Why Manchester United should revive their interest in Milinkovic-Savic

Manchester United were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace in the league this past weekend. The Red Devils have made a very poor start to their campaign, which has seen the club drop way outside the top-four race.

Jose Mourinho has come under increasing criticism since the start of the season despite spending a huge chunk of fee on transfers over the last year. The manager definitely has to make amends before it’s too late and he can start by diving back into the transfer market when it opens in January.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United were linked with a move for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the summer. The manager also attended one of the midfielder’s national team games and Savic was pleased a manager of Jose’s stature was in attendance to watch him.

The Red Devils were continually linked with a move for the Lazio star but advanced negotiations failed to materialise as Savic remained in the Serie A. But it is now time for Mourinho to revive his interest in the player and consider making a move in January.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Manchester United have looked lacklustre in the middle of the park, causing no real threat or venom going forward. New signing Fred has failed to make an impact and with a number of other stars being inconsistent in their performances, it calls out for fresh faces to be brought in.

Savic is a pass master who is in a class of his own. He is a crisp and swift distributor of the ball in the middle of the park. The 23-year-old can spot passes before others and is always a step ahead in terms of playing the ball.

Playing as a central attacking midfielder, Savic has averaged a pass success rate of 80.6% in the Serie A this season. He has also averaged 2.7 shots per game. The Serbian has 1 goal and 1 assist in 12 appearances this season. Those numbers may not seem very appealing but stats only tell you half the story. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Manchester United need someone who is capable of unlocking defences with those incisive passes and that’s what Savic loves to do. He is also very good at linking up with teammates in the final third. He can create ample space and opportunities for the likes of Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

Manchester United are in dire need of some top quality at the moment and Jose Mourinho should definitely consider making the move for Savic in January. The Lazio midfielder is one who Jose Mourinho cannot miss out on.
