Manchester United opinion: Red Devils shouldn’t swap De Gea for Courtois

The Metro (h/t Sun) reports that Manchester United are interested in swapping David De Gea for Thibaut Courtois. With Zinedine Zidane now back at the helm, Los Blancos have turned their eyes back to former targets, including Eden Hazard and De Gea.

With the title race out of their hands, Real Madrid have already started looking towards the future. The club has started putting out feelers to see how the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea and a few others would react to their biggest stars being snatched from them.

However, despite all that, it looks like Manchester United and Real Madrid approached each other. Thibaut Courtois hasn’t had the best of times in his
£31.5m return to the La Liga, keeping just 10 clean sheets in 32 games, conceding a stunning 32 goals.

To make things worse, it looks like the fans have turned on him (Sun) and Zidane has dropped him in his first game back. David De Gea, on the other hand, is among the top three goalkeepers in the world, if not the best, and while he did struggle post-Russia, things have changed.

Like most of Manchester United, De Gea struggled under Mourinho and has flourished after the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, making his share of incredible saves. That is why the Red Devils should never even consider a swap deal. The Spanish goalkeeper is among the best in the world.

Furthermore, the 28-year-old has dominated Manchester United’s player of the year votes in recent years. The problem is that his current deal expires at the end of the 2018/19 season. But ESPN has revealed that De Gea wants parity with the club’s top earners, including Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez.

That is something that Manchester United should give the Spaniard with their eyes closed because it’s something that he not only deserves but has more than earned it. While he finally won the Golden Glove last season, David De Gea did so with 18 clean sheets to his name. That’s the joint-highest number of clean sheets since Edwin van der Sar won it with 21.

Conclusion

Goalkeepers in the current day and age do not come cheap because the world has finally acknowledged just how important they are. That has been emphasised with the transfer fees for both Alisson Becker and even Kepa Arrizabalaga.

David De Gea is much better than either of them and is worth as much if not more. Losing him will give Manchester United another headache altogether and it’s something that they cannot afford to have.

Tom Landry once said "Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it's so incredible, it's unbelievable." Football is and always will be the beautiful game. What every child understands, yet every adult struggles to, is that it is a game that defines the nature of the universe. But that's just me.
