Man United splashing the cash on this 24-year-old midfield machine would be a hasty decision in crucial circumstances

Why Manchester United have to stay away from Bruno Fernandes

One of the biggest mysteries this summer was how Bruno Fernandes ended up staying at Sporting Lisbon. The 24-year-old midfielder had a wonderful campaign for the club, scoring 30+ goals and helping the national side win the Nations League title.

Fernandes was linked with Manchester United throughout the summer window (h/t Manchester Evening News), unfortunately, a deal could not be finalised.

The midfielder recently told GQ Portugal that Tottenham were also interested in his services, and he could be on the move (h/t Manchester Evening News). After Fernandes’ deadline day move to Real Madrid failed, some Man United fans are hoping that a winter move to Old Trafford happens.

United might require more goals in the current team, however, they need to avoid splashing the cash on Fernandes in the winter window.

Haste makes waste for United

The Red Devils are still a work in progress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and have got rid of a lot of deadwood.

Chris Smalling and Alexis Sanchez left on loan deals while Romelu Lukaku was sold. Matteo Darmian also ended his nightmare at Old Trafford by joining Parma in the summer window.

United need to make a move in the winter window but it should be for a striker rather than an attacking midfielder.

The Red Devils need to find a replacement for Lukaku, and it will be interesting to see if they make a big move in January or wait until the end of the season.

The current midfield isn’t bad but they need more steel in the middle of the park. Simply relying on Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic will not be enough to protect a talented Paul Pogba.

Fernandes might have a lot of goals in his game but like all signings, he is a risk too. The Portuguese star hasn’t played in an intensive league like the English league and there is a chance he could struggle.

Fred is a perfect example of a midfielder struggling in the Premier League after coming from one of the less competitive leagues.

United cannot afford to sign any more duds after splashing big on certain players, and it would be a wise move to wait until the summer before signing an attacking midfielder.

The Red Devils can also see Pogba’s performances and then make a decision on his future too.

Verdict

United have a lot of things going on at the moment and they need to solve their issues one by one.

Adding Fernandes to the side isn’t guaranteed to solve their goal-scoring problems, and it would be better for them to wait until the end of the season before thinking of landing another attacking midfielder.
