Manchester United opinion: Manchester United should sign Lemina
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have been linked with Southampton’s Mario Lemina. The Gabonese international joined Southampton just two years ago after spending two years with Italian giants Juventus.
Now 25, Lemina perhaps wants to play for a big club again and Manchester United could do with a player like him.
Manchester United lost Ander Herrera to Paris Saint-Germain recently and let Marouane Fellaini move to China in January. They need some midfield reinforcements after having lost two players who did end up featuring a lot while they were at the club.
Lemina would definitely fill the gap left by Ander Herrera. Like Herrera, Lemina is quite tenacious, covers the ground quickly and keeps the game ticking. He doesn’t have a lot of goals or assists in him but does a great job defensively, dribbles his way out danger and can drive from box to box.
He’s also quite versatile. At Juventus and Marseille, he didn’t just play as a box-to-box midfielder but also played on the flanks, as a wing-back and as a right-back. This is due to his ability to cover up the ground very quickly, stay strong and spot some tidy passes.
Lemina wasn’t in Ralph Hassenhuttl’s plans last season, with the Austrian manager preferring the likes of Pierre Emile Hojbejrg, Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse.
Lemina might not have fit the Austrian’s philosophy and should look to continue playing as much as possible. It hasn’t helped that he’s had injury setbacks too.
Lemina must get himself fit again and would be a great midfield option for this current United side. He can cover almost every midfield position and would add the depth that is required in a team like Manchester United. Nemanja Matic is not getting any younger and Lemina could help his game.

The player’s profile is quite similar to someone like Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum, and United would benefit a lot if Lemina can offer what Wijnaldum has done for Liverpool.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a massive rebuilding job at Old Trafford and the transfer window this summer has been promising so far but not good enough. Lemina is of a good age and can be a squad player for years to come.
