Manchester United opinion – Red Devils must sign Kostas Manolas

According to a report in Football Italia, Premier League giants Manchester United are interested in signing AS Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas. The Greek international’s contract in Rome runs until 2022, but he has an affordable release clause of €36m.

It is well-documented that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his staff will be in the summer market to sign a centre-back (h/t Football Italia). They have been taking a close look at Manolas for the past month or so (h/t Express).

On the other hand, Roma may lose most of their prized assets, if they do not qualify for the Champions League (h/t Football Italia). Currently, they are fifth in the table with six games to go.

Nevertheless, here’s why United must do everything to pay the release clause and offer a good deal to Manolas in the summer:

United require a consistent player in central defence

On paper, Manchester United have five options for the centre-back positions. However, three of them have not been doing enough to warrant a place in the regular squad. Yes, we are talking about Marcus Rojo, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly.

They are either injury-prone or far too inconsistent to be a part of a team that wants to challenge Manchester City and/or Liverpool for the Premier League title.

The two regular starters Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling have been doing a decent job, but Ole and his men could do with an upgrade.

Hence, signing Kostas Manolas would be a good idea. The Greece international is consistent in his performance levels, he also remains fit for most of the games throughout the course of a season.

Since the start of previous campaign, the Roma defender has missed only 16 games, which averages upto eight per year (approx). It means that he is available for selection in more than 85% of the games in all competitions.

Manolas would certainly be an upgrade on what Manchester United have at the back. Therefore, they must do everything to pay the release clause and get the Greek at Old Trafford.
